How to Pick Your Business Name in 10 Minutes

You don’t need a week of brainstorming. Use this 10-minute sprint and decide with confidence.

Minute 0–2: Set your angle

Write one line that explains your promise in plain English:
• “I help [who] get [result] in [timeframe or style].”

Underline 2–3 keywords from that line. Those become your name seeds.

Example seeds
• Cleaning: spotless, tenancy, shine
• Coaching: launch, start, scale
• E-com: parcel, post, swift

Minute 3–5: Use simple name formulas

Mix your seeds with these plug-and-play patterns. Aim for 12 options fast.
1. [Outcome] + [Noun]
Sparkle House, Launch Studio, Swift Parcel
2. [Verb] + [Noun]
ClearNest, StartLab, ShipCraft
3. [Place] + [Service]
Newcastle Tenancy, Soho Scale, Tyne Logistics
4. [Founder/Initial] + & Co / Group / Works
A. Alabi & Co, Alabestha Works, 4D Group
5. [Two short words]
Bright Fork, Bold Mint, Clean Arc
6. [Made-up but readable]
Tenanzia, Scalevera, Shipli

Keep each idea 1–3 words, easy to say, easy to spell.

Minute 6–7: Fast filters

Strike out names that fail any of these:
• Say-it test: Say it once, then write it from memory. If you misspell it, bin it.
• Phone test: Would someone get it if you said it over the phone?
• Length: Ideally ≤ 14 characters for handles.
• Clarity: No inside jokes, no hard puns.

You should have 3–5 finalists left.

Minute 8: Quick checks (UK-friendly)
• Google search: Any obvious conflicts or similar local competitors?
• Companies House: Use the name availability checker for limited companies.
• UK IPO trademarks: Quick search for identical or confusingly similar marks in your class.
• Domains & handles: Look for .co.uk or .com plus Instagram/TikTok availability.

If one fails, move to your next finalist. Do not force it.

Minute 9: Tie-breakers

Pick the name that is:
• Easiest to pronounce on first try
• Spells exactly as it sounds
• Flexible enough to cover future offers

Write a tagline to lock the meaning:
• “Bright Fork — Branding that sells fast.”
• “Newcastle Tenancy — End-of-tenancy specialists.”
• “StartLab — Launch your UK business in 30 days.”

Minute 10: Commit and capture
• Reserve the domain
• Grab social handles
• Add the name + tagline to your bio and email footer
• If incorporating, register with Companies House when ready

Quick examples (mix and match)
• Service: Newcastle Tenancy, Sparkle Nest, Tyne Shine
• Coaching: StartLab, Scale North, Launch Proof
• Digital/Tech: Swift Ledger, ParcelLoop, Bold Cart

Pro tip: A good name is a clear promise, not a crossword clue. Decide, claim it, and build proof around it.
